Thank you!

I received such a warm welcome from the FCCLA...which I learned is the Family, career, and community leaders of America organization here at Conant. They gave all of the new teachers this nice little plant to brighten up the classroom. Thanks so much!

Question of the week!

In the spirit of college move-in week this week, here is an interesting probability question to consider!

A special lottery is to be held to select the student who will live in the only deluxe room in a dormitory. There are 100 seniors, 150 juniors, and 200 sophomores who applied. Each senior's name is placed in the lottery 3 times; each junior's name, 2 times; and each sophomore's name, 1 time. What is the probability that a senior's name will be chosen?

Geometry students get creative!

On the first day of school, my 3rd period Geometry CP class got the opportunity to explore geometric relationships with three-dimensional figures. The task? Given 10 gumdrops and 20 toothpicks, create a structure strong enough to hold the weight of a book. Here are some of the designs:

The students discovered that square figures were crushed beneath the heavy book, but found that triangular structures held the best! Wonderful job, class!

Welcome!

Hello everyone and welcome to Mrs. Masterson's blog! Since I'm sure I will be referred to as "the new math teacher" for quite some time, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you.

My name is Becky Masterson and I am excited to start a new school year at CHS. I will be teaching algebra and geometry this semester and also algebra and calculus in the spring.
My alma mater
I grew up in a small town, quite like Jaffrey, called Ledyard in the southeast corner of Connecticut. I went to college at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York. My bachelor's degree is in Mathematics and I have a minor in Psychology. I loved my school so much that I stayed there to earn my master's degree in Math Education. Last year was my first year of teaching and I worked at Legacy High School, a private, special education high school in Manhattan, New York. There I taught 11th and 12th graders in geometry and algebra II/trigonometry. It was an amazing experience.
This summer, my husband accepted a job working at Southern New Hampshire University and I was excited to move north to NH! Hence why I am now here at Conant. Since I am new to the area, I am looking for advice and suggestions about the best places to go and things to see! Some of my hobbies include biking, hiking, letterboxing, trying out new recipes, and spending time with friends and family :)

Me and my husband. He's a math nerd too!
I will be updating this blog to highlight classroom activities and to post a question of the week that students can complete for extra credit. I hope you are getting ready for the new school year!!
